This is a quote from Helena Padilla’s Facebook page: “Every pro was once an amateur. Every expert was once a beginner. So dream big. And start now!!” This quote says a lot about who Padilla is and what kind of fighter she wants to become. This woman needs a fight!
Three years ago, she began her MMA trang, and December 2016 was her first Muay Thai fight, and her first win. She enjoys the sport and says her Nov. 2, 2017 opponent will regret walking into the ring.
Padilla said it was her goal to compete when she started training. “I would watch the girls fight and I would think they are so awesome! Now that I am doing it and I enjoy it.”
However, it is not easy being a woman in this sport. Padilla is the only woman at her gym and trains with men who are heavier than her. She believes this is a common issue because there are not many female amateur Muay Thai fighters.
At 119 pounds, she does not look like a fighter, therefore, people think she is easy to beat. She has had two Muay Thai bouts and won them both.
Padilla is also a college student,
She works for Combate Americas taking care of the fighters. The job allots her publicity and sponsors. Possible opponents think she is semi-pro! She wants to fight her way to the top and she is struggling for that chance.
To mentally prepare for a fight she focuses on her training. She is aware that her opponent must be a good fighter and she respects them. Padilla says she could win or lose, so she tries to keep calm and tells herself it is another sparing. “I spar with men. It can’t be worse than that.”
Her next fight is Nov. 24, 2017, against Lizeth Castaneda (Squiggle over n), in Mexico City.
Padilla wants her fans to know that she is working to improve every day. No matter what, she will never think her opponents are weaker than her. Martial arts is not an easy sport. She respects anyone in martial arts because she understands how hard it is and the sacrifices that are required.
