On the evening of Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2018, Louis Nicholson was walking alone through the town of Grays in Essex, England. During is walk, the 22-year-old was allegedly approached by eight men. These men stopped Nicholson, demanding his cell phone.
Nicholson is an amateur MMA fighter and a coach at TSG MMA Fight School in Corringham. He refused to hand over his cell phone to the men.
According to The Sun, the eight men attacked Nicholson. Despite their superior numbers, the MMA fighter was able to keep his attackers under control. He said he was even able to land some punches and drop some of his foes.
After Nicholson proved he could hold his own against the gang, the alleged assailants drew knives. “The absolute cowards decided eight versus one isn’t a big enough advantage for them,” Nicholson told The Sun. During the ensuing fight, Nicholson was stabbed under his armpit and received a large gash along his forearm.
Nicholson said he tried to move down the street while he was fighting the gang of men, hoping to transport the melee to a more public area, where he might find assistance. However, one assailant decided to break ranks, Nicholson burst through the gap created.
Then, the amateur MMA fighter sprinted into a construction yard and yelled for workers to call the police. The gang had fled the scene by this time.
After the incident, Nicholson was taken to the hospital with serious injuries that were not life-threatening.
Nicholson stated, “Long story short, I said I was ready to fight them because I was not going to give them my things – it was probably a stupid move, I realize that now. I have to say though, that with zero shadow of doubt, martial arts saved my life.”
The MMA fighter is expected to make full recovery. Police in Essex are investigating the incident.
